FLY BY WIRE. The C5 was the most thoroughly "all new" model in Corvette history.

Quality, along with performance and style, were the most important attributes of the new C5. The 1997 Corvette's .29 coefficient of drag was the lowest of any GM car. By comparison the 1980 Corvette had a .44. For more interior room the wheelbase increased from 96.2 to 104.5 inches, yet the overall length increased by barely an inch.

The innovative 350 cubic inch "LS1" engine required no major service until 100,000 miles. Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), like the "fly by wire" used in modern aircraft, eliminated the mechanical accelerator linkage. Wquipped with Goodyear "Extended Mobility Tires", no spare tire, tools or jack were needed.

The new Corvette was the Official Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500 for the 4th time. And, with a nod to its heritage, the C5's double-pod instrument panel brought back memories of the C2's cockpit from 1963 - 1967.
